How admins update a user's profile attributes — name, email, role, department, and other fields.
User attributes drive everything downstream in Continu: who falls into which segment, who gets which Automation, who shows up in which manager's report. Keeping attributes accurate matters. Most attributes can be edited directly from the admin user view, but some are controlled by HRIS sync and will be overwritten on the next sync if edited in Continu.
For the strategic frame on user data flow, see Provisioning and Sync.
How to Edit a User's Details
1. Open Admin → Users.
2. Find the user. Use search or filters.
3. Click the user's name to open their profile.
4. Edit the fields you need to change. Common edits include name, email, role, department, location, manager, and custom attributes.
5. Click Save. Changes apply immediately.
Attributes Controlled by HRIS Sync
If your organization syncs users from an HRIS (Workday, BambooHR, ADP, etc.), the HRIS owns certain attributes. Editing them in Continu works temporarily, but the next sync will overwrite your edits with the HRIS values.
Typical HRIS-controlled attributes include:
- Name
- Manager (manager_id field)
- Department
- Location
- Hire date
- Job title
If you need to update an HRIS-controlled attribute permanently, the change has to happen at the HRIS. The next sync pulls the corrected value into Continu.
Attributes Always Editable in Continu
Some attributes are typically Continu-side only and not overwritten by sync:
- User Role
- Group memberships
- Time zone preference
- Language preference
- Notification preferences
- Manager permission configurations
Your exact attribute-ownership map depends on your sync configuration. Confirm with your admin if a specific attribute keeps reverting.
Bulk Edits
For changes that affect many users at once, use a bulk import instead. Prepare a CSV with the user identifier and the updated columns, and upload. See Uploading Your User File (Bulk Import).
