Two ways to assign users to a Profile — bulk through the Profile, or individually through the user record. Updates to a Profile automatically apply to assigned users.
Assigning a Profile to a user is what activates their permissions. Until a user is in a Profile, they have only the default permissions of their role. Once assigned, the Profile defines what they can do — and any future changes to the Profile automatically apply to them.
Continu offers two paths: bulk-assign multiple users to a Profile, or assign a Profile to one user from their user record. Use bulk when rolling out a Profile to a new audience; use individual when adjusting a single user's permissions.
For Profile setup, see Creating Profiles. For the permissions reference, see Profiles Permissions In-Depth Guide.
Option 1: Assign Through the Profile
1. Open the Profile. Click the three dots next to the Profile you're assigning users to, then select Assign to Users.
2. Choose the audience. Use the search bar to find users individually or by attributes (department, location, etc.).
3. Select users. Use checkboxes to select as many users as needed.
4. Preview and confirm. The user count for the Profile updates after confirmation.
Option 2: Assign From the User Record
Navigate to Admin > Users, find the user, and select a Profile from the dropdown. Click Save. Useful when you need to adjust a single user's permissions without opening the Profile.
What to Know About Profile Assignment
Updates propagate automatically. When you change a Profile's permissions, every user assigned to it picks up the new permissions automatically. Useful when you need to add a capability to a role without touching every user.
Users can hold multiple Profiles. A user can be assigned multiple Profiles. Permissions stack — the user gets the union of all their Profiles' permissions.
Start narrow, broaden over time. When assigning a new Profile, start with a small audience to validate behavior before rolling out widely. A misconfigured Profile applied to dozens of users at once is harder to roll back than one applied to a handful for testing.
Configuration Pitfalls
Assigning a Profile to the Wrong Role. Profiles don't work on User or External User accounts. Verify the target users are Admin or Creator before assigning.
Not Communicating Profile Changes. When you change a Profile, every assigned user's permissions change silently. For Profiles affecting many users, communicate the change so people aren't surprised when something they could do yesterday is gone today.
Stacking Profiles Without Reviewing Cumulative Permissions. A user with three Profiles gets the union of all three. After multiple assignments, the user may have permissions you didn't intend. Audit Profile assignments periodically.
Forgetting Users May Need to Refresh. Profile changes can take effect on next login or on a manual refresh. If a user reports they don't see the new permission, have them log out and back in.
