Reading a Report Correctly: Scope, State, Time

Every report — an Admin Report, a Report Builder export, or a Continu Insights visualization — is built from the same three dimensions. Knowing them is what keeps two correct reports from looking like they contradict each other.

Why Track numbers can look inconsistent (and that's correct)

Compare "assigned users" across the three views below and you'll get three different totals. That's not a bug, it's three different scopes. Confirm which one you're looking at before you compare anything.

View Scope Use it for
Track's Analytics tab Started Content Analytics on the Track page, scoped to learners who've started it. Engagement questions — who's actually in motion.
Track's Analytics tab Currently assigned A second view on the same tab, scoped to current assignment recipients. The status of people actively assigned right now.
Assignment Summary Report All-time Includes every historical assignment instance for the Track. Aggregate performance over the life of the program.

The three dimensions behind every report

Scope

Who's included — an assignment, a Track, or a segment. Change the scope and the denominator changes with it.

State filter

Not Started, In Progress, Completed, or Expired. Decide which states belong in your answer before you read the percentage.

Time filter

Assignment date, completion date, or event date. The same learner can appear in or out of a report depending on which date it's filtering on.

Key definitions

  • Completion means meeting the content's specific criteria — a view, a passing grade, an attendance mark.
  • Percent complete is items completed ÷ items required.
  • Time to complete runs from first open to the completion event.
  • Attendance is based on your video conferencing integration's data.

Before you report a discrepancy. Confirm you're comparing reports with the same scope, state filter, and time filter. Two reports built on different dimensions will show different numbers for the same question — and both will be correct.
