This guide outlines each Audience Trigger available when creating an automation in Continu. You’ll find timing details, use cases, and key considerations to help you choose the right trigger for your scenario.
A User Is Added To Continu
Triggers: When a user confirms their account and logs in for the first time.
Use this when: You want to launch an automation based on a user's first login.
Need to assign content before login? Use A User Was Hired Today or A User Was Hired X Days Ago instead.
A User is Updated
Triggers: When an active user account is updated with changes.
Saving a profile without making changes will not trigger the automation.
The user must have confirmed their account.
Use this when: You want automations to react to user profile changes, such as department or title updates.
A User is Created or Updated
Triggers: When a user is added or updated.
This combines the behavior of User Is Added to Continu and User Is Updated. It does not trigger if the user is provisioned in a muted state.
Use this when: You want a general-purpose trigger for onboarding or changes to user details.
A User Has Completed Content
Triggers: Immediately after a user completes a course, path, or other content.
Use this when: You want to assign follow-up learning, feedback requests, or certification steps.
A User Has Completed An Assignment
Triggers: Based on the delay you set during automation setup.
A 1-day delay triggers ~24 hours after completion
A 2-day delay triggers ~48 hours later, and so on
Exact timing may vary slightly based on processing intervals
0-Day Delay Behavior:
Triggers the automation immediately after completion and includes all past completions, not just new ones.
A User Has Registered For A Workshop
Triggers: Immediately after a user registers.
Use this when: You want to send reminders, pre-work, or calendar events after registration.
A User Has Attended A Workshop
Triggers: Once the user is marked as “Attended.”
Use this when: You want to follow up with recordings, next steps, or surveys.
A User was Hired Today
Triggers: Daily at 7:00 AM PT / 10:00 AM ET for users with a hire date set to today.
Users must have a valid hire date
The user must be added to Continu before the trigger time
Use this when: You want to preload assignments for new hires before they log in.
A User was Hired Exactly 60 Days Ago
Triggers: Daily at 2:30 PM PT / 5:30 PM ET for users hired 60 days ago.
A User was Hired Exactly 90 Days Ago
Triggers: Daily at 2:30 PM PT / 5:30 PM ET for users hired 90 days ago.
A User was Hired exactly X Days Ago
Triggers: Daily at 2:30 PM PT / 5:30 PM ET, based on the number of days you specify.
These triggers require a valid hire date to function correctly.
