How to record and submit a webcam-based video assessment — from finding the assignment to seeing your submission.
A webcam assessment captures a video of you responding to a prompt. You'll typically be demonstrating something — a pitch, a scenario response, a walkthrough — that's easier to show than to write about. A human grader reviews your recording against a rubric and provides feedback.
Before you start, make sure your browser has camera and microphone permissions enabled for Continu. If your assessment allows you to retake, you'll have a chance to redo your recording before submitting. If it doesn't, plan your response before clicking Start.
How to Find Your Assessment
Two ways to start:
From an email notification. When the assessment is assigned, you'll get an email (and/or Slack message). Click the link to go straight to the assessment.
From your Continu dashboard. Open your dashboard and find the assessment in your open assignments. Click it to start.
How to Complete a Webcam Assessment
1. Review the prompt. Read the video prompt and any assessment description carefully. Note the time limit and what you're being asked to demonstrate.
2. Click Start to begin recording. The recording starts when you click Start. Your camera and microphone activate, and the recording timer begins.
3. Record your response. Demonstrate what the prompt is asking for. The recording timer shows how much time you have left.
4. Review and submit. When you finish, you can play back your recording before submitting. If the assessment allows retakes and you want to redo it, you can. Otherwise, click Submit to send your recording for grading.
Tips for a Good Recording
Find a quiet space with good light. Background noise and poor lighting affect how the grader experiences your submission. Face a window or light source, and minimize background noise.
Plan before you start. Most webcam recordings are one take. Mentally rehearse your response before clicking Start so you don't lose time figuring out what to say on camera.
Watch the timer. The recording has a time limit. Pace your response so you finish within the limit — running out of time mid-response usually scores lower than a complete but shorter answer.
Speak clearly to the camera. The grader needs to hear what you're saying. Speak at a natural pace and direct your voice toward your laptop or webcam mic.
Check your permissions if recording fails. If the recording doesn't start, your browser may not have camera/microphone permissions for Continu. Open your browser settings and grant the permissions, then refresh the assessment page.
What Happens After You Submit
Manual grading. Video assessments are always graded by a human — your manager, a buddy, or a designated grader. The grader watches your recording and scores it against the rubric or overall point value.
Grading SLA. Most programs have a defined grading SLA (often 5 business days). If yours is taking longer, follow up with your manager or the program owner.
Result and feedback. Once graded, you can review your score and any grader feedback. See Viewing a Graded Assessment.
